LUBA STAFF

Size 162 CM
Material Wood
Origin D.R. Congo

The staff is an important symbol
of the royal power among the Luba
people. Presenting very singular
features, the staff can be related to
different objects presenting these
very geometric treatments for the
faces and the ears. They all have
been produced by the same carver :
- The Luba staff from the
Völkerkunde Museum of Munich
collected by Fritz Mitchell in 1911
and published in Memory: Luba Art
and the Making of History, page
161 (Robert and Roberts, 1996)
- A neckrest and a figure collected
by Albert Emile Jules Wibier
(1876 - 1952), the director of the
radio services who stayed in Congo
from 1911 to 1920 and donated his
objects to the Royal Museum of
Central Africa in Tervuren in 1953.
Provenance:
Colonial Belgian Collection
